Stardeath & White Dwarfs, The Philistines, Be/Non @ Riot Room
Tonight, The Riot Room will fill with the absolute weirdness of Stardeath & White Dwarfs. The Oklahoma City freak-rockers will be supported by Kansas City’s own Be/Non and The Philistines, making for a concert that will, for lack of a better term, rock. All three bands have a distorted feel that kicks in hard, and all three bands put on a live show that is not to be missed.
What would Kansas City be without Be/Non? The short answer: a lot less cool. Be/Non has been a musical staple in Kansas City for over twenty years, and for good reason. The band’s ability to blend the smoothness of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin with the weirdness of woods, with heat of The Violent Femmes gives its music a strange and alluring sound that can comfortably fit a melancholy evening or an avant-garde art crawl. This aural flexibility allows Be/Non fill a variety of resonances both on record and on stage. Fluidly shifting from rigid rock to amorphous drone, Be/Non’s live show is nothing short of mesmerizing.
The Philistines have a sound that seems to have one simple mission: to shake its listeners to the core. Whether its the band’s incendiary lead riffs or its pummeling rhythm section, The Philistines make music that is meant to be heard at maximum volume. This quality combined with a stage show so energetic that it causes spontaneous nuclear fission gives the band a stage presence that is second to none. On record, The Philistines make guitar shattering, voice shredding rock, and on stage they back up this sound with a physicality that is impossible to ape.
Stardeath & White Dwarfs do something no other band does, or more accurately the band accomplishes what many try but few succeed in doing, namely, mixing the spacey indie pop of acts like Starfucker and Ariel Pink with the heavy-grit and distortion of bands like Tobacco and Icky Blossoms. The result is a sound that absolutely drips with passion and tension. Equal parts dance party and punk house show, Stardeath & White Dwarfs can satisfy fans of doom and electronica alike. This mix of aesthetics seems prime for the stage. As the below video shows, the band’s performances combine their music with a killer light show and a strong physical presence to create something on stage as unique as the sounds they’ve recorded.
Tonight, The Riot Room will put on one of the best concerts of the fall. Featuring The Philistines, Be/Non, and Stardeath & White Dwarfs, the show will bubble with energy. Starting at 8pm, the show is 21+, and tickets will be $10. This concert will shift from the weird, to the fun, to the unforgiving and back again–usually while the same band is still on stage.
