New St. Vincent Track, “Birth in Reverse”

Annie Clark, known by her stage name St. Vincent, has a knack for transporting the tame and ordinary into bizarre alternate dimensions, often teetering between opposing realms. “Birth in Reverse,” the first single from the upcoming self-titled album, set for release on February 25th, waivers brilliantly between the bellicose and the mundane.

The song begins, “Oh what an ordinary day. Take out the garbage, masturbate,” depicting (somewhat comically) the everyday humdrum over agitated drums and a solid guitar riff that mimics the vocals. The tone shifts after Clark sings, “Here’s my report from the edge.” As it progresses, the guitar and drums intensify and veer into variations, shoving the speaker away from routine existence “like a birth in reverse.”

St. Vincent is set to play Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas March 31st, 2014.
