Live Tonight: Week Of February 23rd – March 1st: No Leap Year Edition

Now that the Oscars are over…what else do we have to look forward to? The SAG awards? The Machinima awards? The MTV VMA’s? What a bleak future we have ahead of us. No wait, we have the spring concert season coming up! March and April are always cram packed with concerts and tours and festivals in and around Kansas City, and it looks to stay that way for 2015. Sweet!

Hozier with Asgeir at Liberty Hall 8 PM $Sold The Eff Out

Huge crossover alternative pop hits rarely have much staying power, but I can’t think of one that’s been everywhere as much and for as long as Hozier’s anthemic “Take Me To Church.” It’s honestly played on just about every radio station, in commercials and even was featured on ESPN. This dude is huge and it’s no surprise his show tomorrow night at Liberty Hall is sold out. Good luck with the scalpers!

Model Stranger with Alien Jones, Riala, Via Luna at Riot Room 8 PM $7

Merle Haggard with Noel Haggard at The Uptown 8 PM $40

The Conquerors with Arc Flash, Drugs and Attics at The Union 10 PM $FREE

Alestorm with The Deadcrew of Oddwood, Rainbowdragoneyes, Hellevate at Riot Room 8 PM $20

As ridiculous as it may sound, there are genres of heavy metal known as viking metal, folk metal and celtic metal. But the UK’s Alestorm have almost single-handedly perfected a new genre all themselves – pirate metal! Fast-paced, uplifting songs about drinking mead, scoring wenches and sailing the seven seas. And they also have a keytar! If you hear a ruckus from Westport on Tuesday night, rest easy knowing it’s just a bunch of landlubbers pining for the seas.

Mike Nicholai with Hot Dog Skeletons at Davey’s Uptown 8:30 PM $4

Wednesday, February 25th

The Districts at Record Bar 9:30 PM $10

Aaron Lewis at VooDoo Lounge 8 PM $40

Napalm Death with Voivod, Exhumed, Iron Reagan, Phobia, Black Crown Initiate, Altered Beast at The Granada 5 PM $20

Without British grindcore pioneers Napalm Death, extreme music would not be the same. Their landmark album Scum, released almost 30 years ago, was an instant game-changer upon release and in a rare occurrence, the band has only gotten more vicious with age. Always seeting with political rage and bringing an insane stage presence with them, Napalm Death caps off an amazing death metal and grindcore bill at the Granada on Thursday.

Deco Auto with Gentlemen Rogues, Varma Cross at The Replay 10 PM $3

Steve Aoki with Headhunterz, Caked Up, Dirtyphonics, Reid Stefan at The Midland 8 PM $40

Jabee at Riot Room 8:30 PM $8

Friday, February 27th

The Life And Times with Maps For Travelers, Jorge Arana Trio at Record Bar 9:30 PM $12

An incredibly atmospheric, talented and amazing band – The Life And Times will be rocking the Record Bar with a couple of other fantastic local groups. Maps For Travelers is fast becoming one of my favorite local acts, whereas the Jorge Arana Trio already is one of my favorite local groups. You don’t want to miss these three together!

Not A Planet with Kangaroo Knife Fight, Teach Me Equals at Riot Room 8 PM $10

Red Kate with The Mad Kings at The Replay 6 PM $3

Cobalt Cranes with The Conquerors, Who & The Fucks at The Replay 10 PM $3

Saturday, February 28th

Chicago Afrobeat Project at The Bottleneck 9 PM

Francisco The Man with Casey Jack, Avenue 17, Famous Mammoth at Riot Room 4 PM $5

In The Shadow with High Rise Robots, American Ghouls, Tower Nine at Riot Room 8 PM $7

Sunday, March 1st

Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band with Dads and Field Mouse at Record Bar 7:30 PM $15

Kevin Devine is amazing. Already an established name in the circles of indie rock, folk punk, post-hardcore and just about everything else. But with Dads and Field Mouse? This is a can’t-miss show to bring us into Spring.

Jefe at Riot Room 8 PM $14
