Kansas City Blackdeath Fest 2016: A Primer to Kansas City’s Annual Black/Death Metal Festival

This weekend is the 2nd annual Kansas City Blackdeath Fest. Featuring almost twenty underground extreme metal acts from all over the country, it can be a bit daunting going into this weekend. However, here is a handy guide to several of the bands playing this year – to get your neck ready for massive headbanging.

Friday, September 16th

Returning after a stellar performance at the inaugural Blackdeath Fest, Chicago’s Fin headlines night one this year and there isn’t a better band to do it. Punishing two-man black metal that sounds like it was ripped straight out of the Norwegian 90′s black metal scene – a spectacle that is not to be missed.

Speaking of old-school black metal, Stonehaven sounds like viking-tinged black metal influenced by the likes of Windir, old Enslaved and Moonsorrow – and they’re from right here! These hometown guys close out the 2nd stage on Friday and will be decked out in corpsepaint and animal furs for all to enjoy.

Absolute insanity – there is no other way to describe Nebraska’s Vickers. Returning from their unforgettable set at last years Blackdeath Fest, Vickers can only be described as satanic blackened noise – often accompanied with the ritual act of burning hair live on stage (yes, this happened last year.) Easily one of the most unforgettable performances you will ever see.

One of the reasons why the KC Blackdeath Fest is the real deal. Chicago’s Nucleus are one of the greatest underground metal bands in existence today – a combination of Demilich, Timeghoul, Gorguts and even some Death make for some of the catchiest and brutal riff-filled death metal you can get anywhere. A fitting headliner to close out the festival.

Dead Shore

Not enough death metal? I got you. Dead Shore is classic-sounding brutal death metal (none of that slam nonsense) that relies of riffing and headbanging – like it should be! Sure to induce some of the biggest mosh pits of the weekend.

With one of the best sets of the weekend last year, California’s Conjuror are back with even more primal, mystical, no-frills black metal. For fans of old Darkthrone, Taake and Satanic Warmaster.
